OK, well one of the cows (and her calf!)

Hm, maybe a little too close on this one.

There we go!

And one from the back.

So that is Sparkle, their Jersey cow (don't worry, they did not name her that stupid name, she came with it and I wonder if it's a similar thing to horses where it's bad luck to rename them?) She is the one that gave birth to the calf four days ago, hence her gigundo udder. Jersey cows are my favorite because they produce the milk with the highest butterfat content, and anyone that knows me at all knows that I love butterfat in all its forms.

Sorry for the blurry photos, I didn't want to upset his feeding by using flash. But that is the four day old calf! He doesn't have a name yet so we call him "the calf." K and I went back to see him when he wasn't feeding and took some flash photos which still aren't great, but a bit better.

I don't yet have good pictures of Dorie and Mercy, the other two cows (Brown Swiss), especially ones that show how big they are (!) but I will post as soon as I have some good ones!
Stay tuned next time for tales of milk-drinking chickens, swamp carpentry and why I feel at home with a group of middle aged women that talk about making their own cider vinegar.
I love these cows!
ReplyDeleteName ideas for the calf: Nelson, William, Salem, Isaac, Sebastion, Byron, Caleb, Tennessee, Vonnegut, Jay...
Also, does a new-mama cow produce very different milk from a cow that hasn't recently given birth?
I once babysat a three year-old boy that had a cat whose name was "Barkle", as he informed me. I said, "Oh, that's nice, Barkle is a good name" to which the three year-old angrily responded, "Not Barkle, BARKLE!" It took me two days to realize the cat's name was Sparkle and the three year old just had a speech impediment.
ReplyDeleteAlex - Whole post about this about to be posted! Good question!
ReplyDeleteAcadia - HAHA! Love it. As someone that had every speech impediment imaginable when I was little, I deeply appreciate the kid's frustration.
The little guy is really cute!
